Description
The TONGREN Chinese Antique Trunk is a rare and characterful piece dating to circa 1900 from Shanxi province, crafted from solid poplar wood. Originally used as an opera trunk, it would have travelled with performers to store and transport costumes, textiles, and props essential to traditional Chinese opera. The exterior is richly decorated with hand-painted lacquer work, now beautifully aged, revealing both its history and craftsmanship.
The front panel features vibrant floral motifs, most notably peonies, which in Chinese culture symbolise wealth, honour, and prosperity. Surrounding blossoms and decorative elements represent abundance, beauty, and good fortune. The intricate framing and balanced composition reflect traditional Chinese design principles, where symmetry and symbolism were deeply valued.
Beyond its history, this trunk offers practical storage with a generous internal compartment. It works well as a statement piece in a living space, at the foot of a bed, or as a distinctive storage chest. The darker lacquered body contrasts with the detailed artwork, creating a striking visual focal point.
