Look Closely
You’ll find this character woven through Chinese decorative arts, often hiding in plain sight. 囍 is the Double Happiness symbol, created by placing the character for happiness, 喜, twice side by side.
Why Double?
Traditionally associated with marriage and weddings, the two characters represent happiness shared between a couple. Over time, the motif became closely associated with joy, harmony and good fortune, making its way onto ceramics, textiles, furniture and decorative objects.
Designed to Be Seen
Part of its beauty is its symmetry. The mirrored form gives the character an almost architectural quality, which is why it works so beautifully as decoration, whether painted boldly onto porcelain or repeated as a tiny pattern.
A Motif That Travels
Look closely at our pieces and you’ll spot Double Happiness in very different guises: commanding the centre of a blue-and-white jar, wrapped around porcelain beads, or appearing as a small detail on a tassel. Once you recognise it, you’ll start seeing it everywhere.
Meaning at Home
Perhaps that is why symbolic objects have such staying power in interiors. Beyond colour and form, they bring a story into the room, and in this case, a rather lovely wish for happiness shared.
