The JIANGXI Chinese Antique Opera Trunk c.1890 is a striking example of traditional Chinese chest furniture, handcrafted over 130 years ago in the Shanxi province. Made from Wutong wood and finished in a deep black lacquer, this antique Oriental trunk is richly decorated with original hand-painted scenes drawn from classical Chinese opera.
These trunks were once essential travel companions for opera troupes as they toured rural villages and towns across China. Designed to store elaborate costumes, makeup, and props, each chest was both practical and decorative. The vivid paintings on this piece depict theatrical stage scenes from famous operas, along with auspicious Chinese symbols — capturing the artistry and culture of the time.
