Description
This lovely 130-year-old antique Wutong trunk from the Shanxi province in China has been lacquered in black and decorated with traditional Oriental hand-painting.
This Chinese Antique Opera Trunk c.1890 is a beautifully hand lacquered storage trunk that is decorated with hand-painted scenes from Chinese operas. These trunks were used by opera troupes who travelled throughout the provinces, performing in villages and towns. The trunks would have contained all of the costumes and props needed for their performances. The hand-painted scenes on the trunk depict stage scenes from well-known Oriental operas, as well as important symbols.
The trunk is a wonderful example of Chinese craftsmanship and would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
