Orchid is situated in a restored 200-year-old 3,500-square foot barn in the heart of the Hampshire countryside near Winchester, UK, just outside the market town of Stockbridge. The barn is styled with room-settings inspiring you to imagine how pieces could fit or be used in your home.
Launched in March 2002 by Jemma Page and Mimmi Waugh, Orchid imports reclaimed teak furniture manufactured in Indonesia and antiques from China. Jemma and Mimmi discovered they shared a love for the simple and striking designs of the Far East – but found it almost impossible to buy furniture in the UK at reasonable prices.
Spotting a gap in the market between mass-produced cheaper furniture and the very expensive antique shops in the region, they have established a refreshing range of superbly made, simple yet striking furniture which is manufactured in Jakarta, Indonesia from reclaimed teak, and carefully selected antiques which they choose themselves on their travels in China. This is complemented by Orchid’s range of Oriental accessories and lighting.
Contrary to the popular belief that Chinese furniture is highly ornate and decorated, Orchid offers pieces which are stunning in their simplicity with clean lines, polished to enhance the grain in the wood and still functional – pieces which will last for life. |
